Bamboo the species

Bamboos are perennial evergreen plants in the grass family Poaceae, belonging to the sub-family of Bambusoideae. There are between 60 to 90 genera and between 1,100 and 1,500 species of bamboo worldwide. China has the most bamboo, covering around 4,830,667 hectares (ha), or about 38% of the world’s total bamboo area. Moso Bamboo forests account for 3,372,000 ha in China, representing 70% of China’s total bamboo area. Among all Chinese provinces, Fujian has the largest areas of bamboo, with Moso Bamboo covering a total of around 830,000 ha.

The natural habitat of Moso Bamboo is found in tropical and subtropical regions between 46 N and 47 S latitude, reaching elevations as high as 4,000 metres. Moso Bamboo grows up to 120 centimetres in 24 hours and to a height of 24 metres in 40 to 50 days, which makes it one of the fastest growing plants. Bamboo spreads mainly through its rhizomes (roots), which can spread widely underground and sprout new culms (shoots) which break through the surface.

Moso Bamboo shoots are a popular vegetable widely used in Chinese and Japanese cuisine. The bamboo shoots have a high water and fibre content, which makes them a filling vegetable and therefore ideal for people wanting to lose weight. In addition, the bamboo shoots are high in protein, low in saturated fat and cholesterol and an excellent source of dietary fibre, Vitamin C, Thiamin, Vitamin B6, Potassium, Zinc, Copper and Manganese.

All parts of the bamboo tree can be used. The leaves are used to extract flavour, brew green bamboo leaf liquor and drinks. The culms produce bamboo plywood, furniture and daily necessities such as chopsticks, mats and curtains. Bamboo scrap is used to produce charcoal and vinegar. Winter and spring bamboo shoots are delicious vegetables widely used in Chinese and Asian cooking. Even the bamboo roots are sometimes collected by artists to carve sculptures. In addition, with the application of modern technologies, bamboo is also used in industries such as construction, pulp and paper, furniture, light industry, medicine and textiles.
