Cultivation and harvesting

Our plantations are 100% organic as the bamboo leaves function as a natural fertiliser. The bamboo shoots grow out of the roots and winter shoots and spring shoots grow independently, i.e. we can harvest both a winter shoot and a spring shoot out of the same root the same year. Spring shoots which are not harvested grow into trees.

Winter bamboo shoots are harvested from November to February when they are below the ground. Due to the relative scarcity of winter bamboo shoots, they command a higher price than spring shoots. The spring shoots are harvested in March and April before they turn into trees. Around half of our harvested spring shoots are sold fresh and the other half are processed.

The bamboo trees are harvested from August to December. Due to its strength and flexibility, the bamboo tree can be used in a variety of applications. For centuries it has been used as scaffolding and an input material for furniture making. In recent years, bamboo is increasingly used for the production of paper, flooring as well as interior decoration.

As we are harvesting winter shoots, spring shoots and bamboo trees every year, we are able to generate a high return from our plantations. The winter and spring shoots are harvested annually, whereas the bamboo trees are normally harvested during the second or third year after the quality of the tree has improved. Hence, the turnover rate for the entire plantation is around three years.

Based on market conditions, we can adjust the harvesting volumes of bamboo shoots and bamboo trees to maximise the return. In addition, we channel bamboo trees of different quality to the most suitable industries. For example, straighter and thicker trees are sold to flooring and furniture manufacturers, where the quality of the tree is important, whereas lower quality trees are used for pulp and paper production or making chop-sticks. The more distribution channels and customers we have, the more we are able to fine tune the sales process which will lead to an increase in average sales prices and overall higher margins.

In an independent third party study, the conclusion was that: "The expert team generally received a very positive impression concerning the management of the bamboo plantations by the Company with regard to environmental compliance and performance. Becoming involved in the villages as an important stakeholder in local natural resource management, the Company plays and will play a key role in local rural development."
